Helen Spiers, soprano

Helen-at-mic-smHelen was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia where she began singing in church choirs at the age of 8. In the early 60s she sang with a Toronto dance band, had a 25-year hiatus from singing, and in the late 80s joined an amateur musical theatre group. She began her classical vocal studies mid-life and has performed in many amateur musicals, downtown supper clubs, and for three years at Roy Thompson Hall during the Seniors’ Jubilee. She was a first place winner in the Senior Star Idol Competition in the GTA. She is a regular soloist for various Toronto churches, weddings and special occasions. She has been a chorister and soloist with the Shevchenko Musical Ensemble since 2000 and appears regularly as soloist with the Toronto Mandolin Orchestra. Helen’s repertoire with the TMO includes Papa, Can You Hear Me? from Yentl by M.Legrand, You’ll Never Walk Alone from Carousel by Rogers and Hammerstein,  Elegy by A. Dvorak.
