A presentation of the National Shevchenko Musical Ensemble Guild of Canada with support from the Toronto Arts Council

More about the event:

Carnaval!
Take a break from winter with a toe-tapping trip to Brazil and other parts of South America. The Toronto Mandolin Orchestra will present a lively selection of Latin flavoured pieces for orchestra as well as favourites from its Slavic repertoire. Ira Erokhina (domra) and John Lettieri (accordion) will perform the virtuosic duet Amarado. Two-time Canadian Folk Music Award nominees, Tio Chorinho, will present two sets of pure Brazilian Choro music.

Tio Chorinho
Tio Chorinho is the only group in Canada dedicated to performing Brazilian Choro music. Primarily instrumental, Choro originated in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro in the late 19th-century. It blends popular and classical European styles with Afro-Brazilian influences to create an exciting and soulful sound that is at once both virtuosic and intimate. Inspired by the compositions and recordings of the great Brazilian mandolin master Jacob do Bandolim, Tio Chorinho also performs music by other composers of the genre, including Ernesto Nazareth, Pixinguinha, Waldir Azevedo and Luiz Americano as well as the group’s own original compositions. The group’s debut CD, Chora Brazil, received two nominations at the 2016 Canadian Folk Music Awards (World Music and Instrumental Group of the Year). Find out more about Tio Chorinho online at tiochorinho.com
