The Carnival of the Animals, a humorous musical suite of 14 movements (the best known being “The Swan”), was performed only to small audiences during the composer’s lifetime, as Saint-Saens felt that its frivolity would damage his standing as a serious composer.

From the first note to the last, it is an outpouring of whimsical ideas, complete with buffoonery, grace, and science.
